Arson Investigation Of The Stables Continues
Police haven’t identified a specific suspect in connection with the April 7 fire intentionally set at The Stables restaurant.
The fire remains an active arson investigation, and at this point, everybody’s a suspect, said Cold Spring Police Department Chief Ed Burk III.
“Arson’s one of the hardest things to prove,” Burk said. “We don’t have any suspect in particular.”
Materials collected from the scene were sent to the state’s crime lab, and investigators are still awaiting the results of those tests, he said.
An accelerant was used in the fire, but whether it was gasoline, kerosene or something else isn’t certain, Burk said.
“At this point we don’t have a whole lot of leads on it,” he said.
The Stables, 4210 Alexandria Pike, had closed March 31 with a note on the door and message that the building was for sale or lease. As of May 14, the property hadn’t been sold.
Firefighters received an automatic sprinkler alarm from The Stables at 12:30 a.m. April 7.
The fire, which caused about $5,000 in damage, was started in and around the garage door, and it spread to the basement, said Gerald Sandfoss, Chief of the Central Campbell County Fire District, in a previous story in The Community Recorder. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which had spread to the basement.
“The fire was intentionally set,” Sandfoss said.
Evidence was collected at the scene, but Sandfoss declined to say what kind of evidence citing it is part of an active investigation.
The Stables opened Labor Day weekend in 2007 after about three months of remodeling inside and out. The owners, Drew Banks and Florence-based 3G Development, locked employees out of the previous restaurant known as the Cold Spring Roadhouse Sunday, May 27, 2007. In May 2007 the employees were greeted with a closed sign and the employees were laid off.
